EURO TRIP (S) !

Travel is one of the things I am most proud of this year. I truly made time to pause, to explore, and to simply enjoy. I was very blessed to go to Europe twice this year and explore Barcelona, Paris, plus Mykonos + the Santorini Greek Islands. Here is a photo journal of my time there. Enjoy!

Paris Highlights

Louvre-#APESHIT. You need to go. We went on a Sunday, only waited for about 10 min to get in and got to see the Mona Lisa. One of the most underwhelming things to see in person but luckily there 4 million other exhibits will definitely keep you satisfied.

Eiffel Tower - cliche? sure. But it is really something to see this piece of architecture in person, let alone at night!

Seine River Cruise - Beautiful views of the Eiffel Tower and Note Dame from the river, especially at night. The bridges are stunning and full of rich history.

Des Gâteaux et du Pain- One of the city’s only female pâtissiers, Claire Damon is doing the damn thing and I have missed her buttery croissants since the moment I left.

LaDuree Macaroons-beautiful and delicious. I couldn’t even bring myself to throw away the box .

Museum of Perfume—SO COOL. You can learn about the history of aromatherapy and even design your own scent. We had a field day in the gift shop. So worth checking out!

“Change is opportunity in disguise. When everything around you starts to change, it’s an invitation to seize new opportunities you might not otherwise have had. In the rush to get things back to “normal”, it’s easy to miss those opportunity or to brush them aside. Instead, don’t be afraid to slow down, take stock and think about as many possibilities as you can and challenge every assumption.”

BARCELONA

offered amazing street culture + art, beautiful beaches breathtaking architecture, the warmest people plus some of the best cuisine I have ever experienced! Also huge fan of their siesta/fiesta schedule. Pretty much you nap from 5-7pm so you can go at 10pm. Such an amazing city and I am already dreaming of going back.

Highlights:

Basilica of the Sagrada Familia-if you can only do one thing in Barcelona visit here. Unique + spectacular architecture

Freixenet- Best visual/historical explanation for Cava in the town. Followed by excellent tour around the labrynth of underground tunnels and a tasting with delicious tapas!

Cava Sola Raventos Son + Pop owned winery! Such a special and personalized experience. Go visit + tell them I sent you.

Arume. STILL DREAMING OF THIS PAELLA. There is a reason they have over 5k reviews on Trip Advisor. A must visit.

Sunset Jazz Cruise- Title says it all. Plus incredible crew and the cava is always chilled! Amazing way to spend your afternoon. My only complaint the two hours went by too fast!

Greece

Biggest tip for when traveling to Greece is go in off season. We went in October and enjoyed mild temps—70/75 and WAY less crowds. We loved the people, and the culture, this is a place where they live simply and move slowly. This was a happy change from our East coast lifestyle!

Sanotrini Recommendations:

Petra Kouzina cooking class—DO THIS. SO WORTH IT. You prepare 5 courses of classic Greek cuisine in a stunning remodeled cave.

Oia- Did you even go to Santorini if you didn’t go to Oia? This was literally voted the best place to watch the sunset in the WORLD. It did not disappoint,

Mykonos:

Mykonos beach hotel—so beautiful! Amazing food, they went above and beyond to ensure we had an incredible stay.

We rented an ATV which is not for the faint of the heart, but we had so much fun exploring the city this way. Offered some great views and we really felt like locals!

Captains -amazing view of the waterfront, staff that treats you like family, and their seafood platter was the stuff dreams are made of. Incredible establishment!

There you have it! A beautiful round up of some of my favorite European memories. Where is your next destination/ can I come?….

yin it to win it

What is life if we aren’t continually learning, questioning and discovering?

I am excited to share that I will be starting a Yin Yoga training this August. Yin yoga has always been a subtle yet profound practice for me.  In stillness, the physical, energetic, emotional and mental states of being are refined and aligned through heightened inner awareness. In Yin we tune in to the meditative power of the breath, observing what arises when you let go of doing and enjoy just being.

Yin yoga is based on the Taoist concept of yin and yang, opposite and complementary principles in nature. Yin is the stable, unmoving, hidden aspect of things; yang is the changing, moving, revealing aspect.

In yin yoga, poses are held for around 5 minutes and focus on working on the body’s connective tissue, as well as calming the mind to achieve inner peace. Regular practice can lead to longer and leaner muscles, a stillness of mind, reduced stress and anxiety.

I can’t wait to introduce this practice to ya'll!  Which of course is accessible to any body shape, type and level or fitness and flexibility. This practice can be a stand alone yoga or meditation practice, or complimentary to your current practice.

It’s especially for anyone who has ever thought “I can’t do yoga, can’t meditate, can’t be still". This practice teaches you that you CAN and you work within your own personal limitations and focus on how it feels, rather than how it is supposed to look.

Sound interesting?  Check out some resources below & stay tuned for more updates on offerings over the coming months.

IT'S GUNNA BE MAY: NEW MONTH + NEW INTENTIONS

This month I have the nudge to move inward and find more balance, flow and joy. As I begin to expand into this higher purpose I know I need to stay grounded to continue to grow- and leave the overwhelm behind. My goal this month is to move slowly, to listen sincerely, and to enjoy all the good that surrounds me.

May Intentions

DB7E187B-1B1A-4B94-BF43-D10B9266B0BF (1).jpg

I trust. I forgive. I flow. I enjoy.

  1. I will trust that my intuition + my inner guidance to always know what I need. Intellectually. Physically. Emotionally. Spiritually.
  2. Forgiveness: For myself + others.
  3. FLOW! In my life, business + partnerships.
  4. ENJOY: I deserve every good every good thing.
Affirmation:

I honor and trust my intuition and that the universe has my highest good in mind. I choose love daily and release any need to control. I allow flow, fun, and joy into my life.

How are you being intentional about the month ahead?

YOGA WHILE BLACK : FRUSTRATING EXPERIENCE 505866050483030595050

I was first introduced to Down Under Yoga when I began working with a yoga nonprofit, and it was the first time I had seen white people calling out other organizations for their whiteness, like winning Best Yoga Studio in Boston, but not having any diversity represented on staff. If you pop into any of their yoga studios, you most likely can count the people of color on one hand. I took note, but honestly I would see these issues at almost every yoga studio I visited, so I still gave them a try and began practicing at Down Under Yoga.

I have often been the only, or one of two people of color in their classes, but I do appreciate the caliber of teachers they bring to the table. Last year they took over Baptiste Studios and began a yoga festival to welcome and celebrate their new studio. The festival was great: a whole weekend of yoga for 30 bucks; my partner and I were thrilled to do it again this year, and I even knew a handful of people attending who were also POC.

It’s funny because the only time my partner and I have really ever practiced at their Cambridge location has been during this festival….

Fast forward to second day of festival: we roll out our mats next to a white male who defined the space as "his studio".. When I told him I was also a yoga teacher in Dorchester (shouts to my family at Four Corners Yoga!) he did not have one question or comment about the studio or its teachers. Instead he let me know how amazing the upcoming teacher—you guessed it, a white male—was. Not too phased by this, we brushed him off and began our practice.

But when this latest incident happened, we were just kinda like, wow... How can we even fuck with this place anymore?

The incident:

My homegirl, my man, and I are putting away our mats, and a white male walks over to us and says, “Excuse me - can I say something? I don't know if you are a family or not, but if you are—it’s so great to see you guys here.” They both rolled their eyes, but I (still on a yoga high) offer him, “Yeah they need some diversity in here, HUH?” He returns, “No, I wish my family came here. I think it’s so cool you came here and practiced as a family. My mom and dad would never do this.”

We walked away. We said no words. Did not continue the festival. We went to the car, and while we did laugh for a solid 15 minutes, there was hurt and frustration behind it.

We then analyzed what had just happened to us:

  1. We are ALL THREE different nationalities. African, Haitian, and Jamaican/Italian, and are clearly not related in the least. And do you say "awesome" when you see groups of white people practicing? Or assume they are related?

  2. Can we just be 3 friends who practice yoga and are just REGULAR SHMEGULAR?  Why the fuck are you applauding us?

  3. Wait, is my bf the dad? Are we both the daughters? Is he our uncle? WHAT EXACTLY DID YOU THINK OUR RELATION WAS?

  4. What stereotypes fed this? We got a really great scholarship after our parents kicked their crack habit, and white parents saved us and introduced us to yoga, and here we all were just waiting for you to affirm our existence???

  5. WHITE PEOPLE, PLEASE DO BETTER. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.

I want to state loud and clear that he did not oppress us or victimize us, but he did hit us with something that is a continuous problem as a person of color, and I am so damn tired of it: the total mental exhaustion of how non-POC perceive you. This is something that white people do not need to spend much mental energy fixing.

It only takes one ignorant, awkward comment to serve as a reminder that you "don't fit" according to other people. Doesn’t this just take the wind right out of you?  Yoga is supposed to be a safe and supportive environment, and WHY is it that only for white people? I have gone through some shit, and have come back to the other side, and forever am grateful to yoga, to my practice, to my breath for that. How can POC focus on our healing, our breathing, when we are waiting for the next ignorant, head-in-ass comment to come our way? Yoga is supposed to be a way to recover from all that bullshit, not expose you to it.

Down Under Yoga, I don’t have the answers for you, and it’s not my job to fix this problem. I will encourage you to look at your yoga faculty, to look in your yoga classrooms, and to ask yourself is this a fair reflection of the city? I will remind you that you do have a responsibility for creating an inclusive environment. I implore you to start hiring and training a community that respects and champions diversity. Whatever you do, don’t ignore POC voices. We deserve space, and we certainly deserve healing.

drink to yo health: all about the berkey water filter

SAY HELLO TO MY PRETTY!

5EE8FA23-FD60-4038-9504-16845D32AE09 (2).JPG

AKA.. the best + most cost effective personal water filtration around! @The Berkey Water filter uses a gravity water filtration technology to get the crap out of the water you are drinking

Investing in a good quality filtration system has been on my list for a while. Getting clean, pure water is one of the best investments you can make for your health as water is literally involved in nearly EVERY body process including blood volume, digestion, absorption, metabolism, breathing, excretion, making new skin & wound healing, joint lubrication and on and on....

Depending on where you live or where your water comes from, the water you drink may contain harmful contaminants like mercury, chlorine, arsenic {WTF}, lead, heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and the list goes on.

I promise you will be shook if you start really doing some research!. Go here to find out exactly what is in your water based on your zip code.

I promise you will be shook if you start really doing some research!. Go here to find out exactly what is in your water based on your zip code.

The Berkey removes 99.99% of all pathogenic bacteria and viruses, heavy metals, inorganic materials like chlorine, (see the full breakdown here) using ceramic filters that contain zero chemicals.  It can even be used with fresh water from a stream/lake, etc. when camping or traveling.

To test to make sure new Berkey filtration elements are working you fill the Berkey with water and red food coloring, and the water comes out crystal clear! I love it! Oh, and did I mention that the current filter elements will last for 6,000 gallons of water?! So most people wouldn't have to buy replacement filters for several years. So stylish + economical!

I really never thought I could be so impressed with water.

I am always trying to keep toxins out of our home and drink more water and this has been one of my favorite purchases of last year. I talk about it so much almost all my friends have one, so seriously consider!

Cheers to our health!
